Benefits

Why Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal therapy is most commonly required when the nerve in a tooth has died or when the pulp is inflamed.

Damage to the nerves and inflammation (swelling) can lead to an infection around the end of the tooth, causing pain. This tends to feel like a constant ache and is often painful to bite on.

Rather than removing the tooth, infected tissue can be removed. The tooth is then cleaned with antibacterial solution, and a filling is placed inside the tooth to prevent recurring infections.

KNOWHOW

Saving Your Bite

Many patients ask us why we try to save teeth rather than remove them. We’ve put together a short list of reasons you may consider Root Canal Treatment over tooth extraction.

  • Bone Loss – Without a tooth in situ the bone shrinks away. This may cause problems with neighbouring teeth

  • Drifting – Neighbouring teeth may tilt and drift into the space of the missing tooth that may lead to gum problems and bite problems

  • Jaw problems – When opposing teeth move up/down into a gap, this may cause problems with your bite, elading to jaw pain

FAQs

A few things we thought you’d like to know…

What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment is a way of treating inflammation, infection or damage to the tissue inside the tooth. It can be a long  process but is not painful. Your dentist will diagnose the root cause of the problem with tests and x-rays before treating the tooth. Root canal therapy will releive painful toothache usually between 24-48 hrs.
How do I know if I need Root Canal Treatment?

Toothache, sensitivity to heat and cold, pain on biting, or swelling may indicate a tooth with a damaged or inflammed nerve.

If you are experiencing dental discomfort, please get in touch so that we can detmine the cause and make you comfrtable as soon as possible.

What is the root canal treatment procedure?
Root canal treatment is done to save the tooth and prevent an extraction. It is called root canal therapy or RCT.
During you treatment you will be numbed. Once we know that you will be comfortable, we open the tooth and carefully clean the inside of your tooth with small files and antibacterial solution. The tooth is then temporarily sealed with an antibiotic dressing and you will return for another treatment before the tooth is filled.
Do I need follow-up treatment after Root Canal Therapy?

Your dentist may suggest placing a crown in the near future.

When teeth have no nerve or blood supply the tissue may become brittle. Placing a crown can help to protect the remaining tooth.
