What To Expect When Getting Your Dental Crown

The process of having a crown  involves two appointments. The first appointment is to prepare your tooth, and the second is to fit the crown.

At your first appointment, we will remove a small amount of tooth enamel and shape the tooth to make room for the crown to sit on the tooth perfectly. This is an enitrely comfortable treatment as we will give local anaesthetic should you need it. After the tooth is shaped, we will take impressions / scans that are sent to a specialist laboratory who will make your crown.

At your second appointment we will check that you are happy with the appearance of your crown before “cementing” it in place. At this stage we will take you through all of the aftercare instructions you will need – if you ever have any questions about your treatment in the future we are always happy to provide advice.

FAQs

A few things we thought you’d like to know…

What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are a tooth-shaped “cover” that can be used to protect a tooth that has been damaged. These are especially useful when there is decay or if a tooth is cracked. Crowns are often designed to mimic the shape and size of natural teeth, so they are not normally noticeable.
Can dental crowns be whitened?

Crowns are covered in porcelain to ensure they look as natural as possible. Unfortunately porcelain is non-porous so does not react to whitening products. If you are thinking about tooth-whitening we recommend lightening your teeth to your desired tooth shade and create the new crown to match.

Which dental crown material is best?
Your dentist will help choose a crown material that best suits your needs.
Many crowns such as bonded crowns are made with a gold core for strength and then covered with tooth-coloured porcelain for aesthetics. On back teeth – or molars – a full gold crown may be suitable if you are more concerned about strength rather than appearance.
What is the difference between a crown and a bridge?

A bridge is a means of attaching a “false tooth” to a healthy tooth to cover a gap left by a missing tooth.

A crown is a “thimble-like” covering over a tooth for protection, support, or aesthetics.

Your dentist may use a crown as an abutment to support a bridge.
